The Department of BioSystems, Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zürich was founded to bring together in one department experimental biologists with theoreticians and engineers and to foster interactions at the interface of the biomedical and the quantitative/engineering sciences.
The department has developed several technology platforms, including a Quantitative Genomics Facility (QGF), a single cell facility (SCF), and a Lab Automation Facility (LAF) to provide scientists with cutting-edge technology for research in Systems and Synthetic Biology. All facilities are supported by technical staff that looks after the equipment and supports users. The SCF and LAF are equipped with state-of-the-art lab automation equipment, cell sorters, and microscopes.
The IT group at BSSE (ITSC) and the Scientific IT Services (SIS) of ETH offer IT and software support. The Iber group has access to all relevant software, a group server with about 100 cores, as well all BSSE central facilities, including cutting-edge microscopes, FACS sorters, a genomic facility. Moreover, the group has established a Zeiss Lightsheet platform and developed the necessary IT and software infrastructure to deal with the data.
